The town of Pollensa, located in the northeast of the island of Mallorca and 53 km. from the capital, Palma de Mallorca, is a picturesque village with a population of approximately 15,000 inhabitants, between the small mountains of "El Calvari" and the "Puig de Maria", in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana. Pollensa was near a Roman rural route, of which two thousand years later there is still the Pont Romá (Roman Bridge, declared Heritage Site), testimony to the important Roman occupation of the area, although the foundations of the city largely correspond to the Arabs, who laid the foundations of the winding alleys, stairs and masonry houses. Once the Arabs were expelled, the Templars took the city in 1236 and built the church of “Nostra Senyora dels Àngels, where a market is held on Sunday mornings.
During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Pollensa and other adjoining places in this part of the island were sacked regularly, but the most important event took place in 1550 when the invading Saracens had to deal with a small local group that was led by Joan Mas and armed only with wood clubs to defeat the pirates. The city celebrates every 2nd of August, within the the celebrations of the 'Mare de Deu dels Àngels' fiesta, a noisy recreation of the battle, with all the locals dressed as Moors and Christians.
Pollensa is a city rich in monuments built throughout its long history. The “Convent de Santo Domingo”, built in Baroque style with a cloister where since 1962, the Pollensa Music Festival is held, the most important clasical music event of the Balearics. The “Capella Roser Vell”, “Sant Jordi” and the “Convent de Monti-Sion” are other interesting religious monuments worth visiting.
On top of the small hill “Es Calvari”, where you climb a long stairway with as many steps as there is days in a year (365 steps), there is a chapel of the eighteenth century, with a beautiful Crucified Christ with the Virgin at the foot of the cross, from XIII century.
